Malaysia is unique among Southeast Asian nations in being both a mainland (peninsular) and an island nation.  It is one of the most racially, ethnically and religiously diverse nations of the world with mosques, churches, Hindu and Buddhist temples, existing side by side. Since it commands the Straits of Malacca, one of the major sea lanes of the World, it has been a major trading hub for centuries; this accounts for the migration of so many ethnic groups. Malaysia obtained its independence from the UK in 1957 and was formed by the union of the Malay States. Once known as an exporter of such staples as tin and rubber, today much of its economy is in the high tech industries. For more information on Malaysia, please click on the above buttons.
