Kyrgyzstan is one of the 5 Central Asian nations, created in 1991 as they jointly claimed their independence from the Soviet Union. (The others are Kazakhstan, Tajikistan, Turkmenistan, and Uzbekistan.). All these nations share a common history of nomadism, tribal warfare, being part of the great Silk Road between East and West, conquest by many nations, the religion of Sunni Islam, and a diversity of peoples in sparsely populated countries. Kyrgyzstan is the second smallest of these Republics and has fewer natural resources than its larger neighbors. It is the poorest of these countries and the one which is struggling to maintain its ethnic identity and to find a place in the world.
