Workshop Introduction

This seminar is designed to help teachers introduce Chinese literature and film into their classes, whether they be English classes, world literature classes or social studies classes.  The seminar will cover Chinese literature from the 6th century BC (starting with Confucius) all the way to modern films of the 20th and 21st centuries.  Some highlights of the seminar will include discussions of poetry from the Books of Songs to Tang and Song dynasty’s high point of poetic development; a look at the development of theatre and plays in China, especially in the Yuan (Mongol conquest) period; the development of short stories, including the great genre of ghost stories, and novels in the Ming and Qing periods.  The 20th and 21st century will be represented by films as well as by short stories.

Workshop Schedule

The seminar will run for 5 days, 6 hours per day. On Monday, August 11, the seminar will begin at 8:30 at which time teachers will be welcomed to the seminar, receive their course packs and fill out the CEU form. The actual class will run from 9:00 to 4:15 with two 15 minutes breaks and a 45 minute break for lunch.

Instructor

The seminar will be taught by Hsiao-ping Wang, instructor in MSU’s Department of Linguistics Germanic, Slavic, Asian and African languages, where she teaches courses in Chinese and Japanese literature, film and culture, as well as advanced courses in Chinese language.  Hsaio-ping lived, studied and taught in California before moving to Chicago to pursue graduate work in Chinese literature and language.  She has been teaching at MSU for the past seven years.

Teacher Responsibilities

This course is free of charge to all teachers.  We will ask each teacher to construct a teaching module or lesson plan.  These will be collected, put on a CD and distributed to all participants the final day of class.  Thus each teacher will have  “bank” of ready made lesson plans to use or adapt.

Continuing Education Units
The Asian Studies Center will apply for 3 CEUs for this 30 hour seminar which will be available to all teachers.  Remember that you will not be able to miss any of the class and still receive the CEUs.

Materials
Each teacher will be given a packet of materials for the course, including the course readings, suggested lesson plans, web resources, suggested books and films to use in different levels, and other teaching material.

Location of the Class and Parking
The class will be taught on the MSU campus in East Lansing, in a room in Wells Hall, C wing.  Teachers can park in the Stadium lot, just across the street from Wells Hall.  They will each be given a parking pass on Monday morning to use for the week of the seminar and thus will not have to pay for parking on campus.  Please do not park in other lots as the parking pass works only in the stadium lot.  If you need driving directions to the campus, or to find Wells Hall and the stadium please check the MSU maps website: http://maps.msu.edu.  For some reason Wells Hall is not listed on the campus map, but it is the odd shaped building next to the International Center.
