Hosting/Presenting
Letter of welcome from MJS Chair Roy Hanashiro and information about presenting at and hosting MJS.
Friends,
The recent academic year was a good one for the Midwest Japan Seminar. Over 150 of you attended one or more of the seminars to hear some wonderful papers presented; many then joined us for a good meal and a couple of drinks.
As you know, regrettably, we cannot offer travel reimbursement for the seminar held in conjunction with the Midwest Conference on Asian Affairs annual meeting. The other meetings, however, we can reimburse 90% of super-saver airfare or 40¢ per mile if you drive.

Do You Wish To Host A Seminar?
If you are interested in hosting MJS, please contact Roy Hanashiro (okuma@umich.edu) as soon as convenient.
The host acts as the local contact and:
- Schedules a rent-free seminar-type room (25-35 seats around a table configuration) for a Saturday afternoon (12:00-5:00pm).
- Arranges for some mid-seminar refreshments (3:00pm or so). MJS can reimburse up to $100.00 for this purpose.
- Arranges for at least 15 hotel rooms to be reserved and paid by participants at reasonable rates ($60-75) as well as a back-up hotel to take overflow.
- Arranges for an after-seminar dinner at a reasonably-priced (about $20.00 including tip and tax) restaurant. Attendees will pay for their own dinners and drinks of course.
- Provides transportation information. Limos and arranged rides are helpful, but not absolutely essential.
Do You Wish to Present?
Please contact Roy Hanashiro (okuma@umich.edu) as far in advance of the date you wish to present on.
As a presenter you will:
- be reimbursed for air or car travel to and from your home, one night in the seminar hotel and all meals that Saturday.
- provide with the MJS convener the title of your paper at least six weeks before the meeting.
- provide the convener with a copy of your paper (20-30 pages max) in electronic form (PDF preferred), which will be sent to attendees.
- On the day of the seminar you will have about 15 minutes to make additional comments (most people will have already read the paper) and then everyone will discuss your paper for 75 minutes or so.
